> Multitasking in P990i

I think you're right... if P990i had at least 2xram and, maybe, hsdpa (when p990 went in the market, the standard was already available), probably now we were talking about new symbian devices, and future of UIQ. Still, it's not explainable why SE built a lot of protos looking good (like P5), then abandoned it.
Oh, well...

Well, let's not exaggerate.
A P990i with latest firmware is definitely capable of minimizing the messaging application and run other applications.
Try to update your firmware through SEUS.

Nobody's exaggerating when it comes to P990's inability to multitask. My current W902 dumbphone multitasks way better. And to think they advertised multitasking as its strong suit during its inception, pffh...It can barely multitask for serious usage on the first day of uptime, so anything beyond that is just pitiful. The only way you can live with it is to unlearn what you've learnt and accept the fact that P990 is a great phone for its time that just can't multitask. Then you can live with it for over 2 years like I did.

this is not exaggerate..Im serious ...around 2005-2006 everything is ready for big show of UIQ 3..according to huge success of P900/P910 everybody waits for next line of UIQ ...
If SE puting better size of ram on P990 many factors has changed...but after release of P990 with first firmware we have only 14-13 mb free ram...ok..ppl wait for another update and another update....and more and more...if im not wrong around 7-8 update on couple of months...now this device has 20 mb on startup and firmware was very stable...yes..great job but not enough...not real multitasker
ppl paid for P990 around 700 USD less or more on release or 1-2 month later...
( aslo on M600/W950 we have this problem)
So when company like SE that cant release like nokia 20-25 smartphones in year must have a big attention with small amount of market share they must release the BEST thing that can offer not like this ....
and after those years SE change mind and go for P1/W960 with huge RAM but on mind of many cutomers nothing changed ...SE symbians phone r Crappy!!....as easy as that...
Im SE fan ...buying P990/P1 and now I own G900 but ordinary customers dont think like me...
SO this is the bigest SE mistake for sure...

what a nice forum here.. everybody has their own opinion.. interesting.. ^^
me, myself prefer using p990i than p1i.. i like the design..
anyway i just see that only around 8.5 memory available by using application above. but i didnt open any application. when i open messenger application, the parameter goes to red... and the remaining is only around 4-5 mb.. is this normal? and when im using for around 1-2 hours chat with that application, the memory goes down slowly until 2-3 mb...
im using swiss manager..
anyway anybody can help to answer this?

I prefer P990 to P1 too in terms of design, it's unique in a sense that you can easily switch it from a feature phone to a smartphone just by opening the flip & vice-versa. No other phone in the market has this original Ericsson R380 form factor.
Back to the memory problem, it wouldn't be too bad if there wasn't the severe memory leak problem. This is where everything fell apart for P990. But then again your memory leak problem seems severe unless you've modded the phone. I noticed this when I modded mine. But a format should solve the problem regardless of it being modded or not

I've been very dissapointed by P990i after waiting it for more than a year.I gave up m600i for it but the mem. problem made me quit it after just 6 months.
It can't multi-task.I couldn't use the browser and listen to music ar the same time! You call this smartphone? With SMP and no modding(was not available in 2007) I could barely get a few MB of free RAM.It was a joke!
The p1 still has memory leaks and usually restarts daily cuz of my heavy browser usage(2-3 hour/day)+email,rss and programs but at least can hold 20 aps if I need it!
