UK car sales fell by 30.5% in March, compared with the same month last year, the latest industry figures have shown.
The number of new UK registrations in March was 313,912, down from 451,642 the year before, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Just noticed that the UK has 15 times more people than NZ but sells 100 times the ammount of new cars. Do New Zealanders not buy new cars that often?

I'd say so. Having been to the UK, I notice that there are a lot more older cars floating round in NZ. This is probably due to stricter laws in the UK.

the government will be offering £2000 scrap value of cars older than 10 years i believe so if you've owned a banger or friend does thats a good way to get a little off the car

The government are going to be offering £2000 if you buy a new car. Only £1000 is supplied by the government and the other £1000 has to be funded by the car manufacturer. The basic rules are as follows:
Criteria for Qualification:
1/ Your car must be older than July 31st 1999.(check the first registered date on your V5 ownership document)
2/ You must have owned the car and had it registered in your name for at least the past year.
3/ The car must have a valid MOT at the time of scrapping.
4/ The ownership (registered keeper name and address) details registered on the scrapped car must exactly match the details on the new car.
5/ The new car (or van) purchased must be brand new, first registered to you.
If you own a car over 10 years old the likelyhood that you will be buying new is quite slim I would have thought.

FIAT are making a massive push forward, taking advantage of the scrappage scheme.

I've heard good things about the Panda 100HP... have a look into that.

Thanks everyone for their replies !
My trade in was a 2003 car, so couldn't get the government deal.
Got a very new Yaris 1.33, and it will be just fine for me...
Would have loved a Mazda RX-8 or similar sporty car, but my joints play up, and when I climb out of a car, I look as cool as a water buffalo.. no offence to any members who are water buffalo's.
Thanks again!
