I haven't used Sony phones but Ericsson and I can tell you that their build quality was excellent!
The metal frame arount the phones' bodies really protected them superbly. I can actually remember dropping my GH688 and R320 a number of times and thought they are gone only for them to switch on after inserting the battery.
I personally think it is not the combination of the two companies but their weak QC department. If you don't have quality checks you are going nowhere.
