Really? Not heard of that before, that would kill femtocell rollout stone dead if all networks and manufacturers adopted that.

Indeed it would kill femtocell and it should, in the UK it's only Orange that support it under their Unique service, but as truffle said, when in wifi spot, it'll let you use sms, calls and net, it's also cheaper to use it, you pay £x a month but that gives you free calls to Orange and landlines, Orange, landlines and other mobiles or Orange, landlines, other mobiles and international calls...
My BB sadly doesn't support UMA.

It sounds like something BB have added to provide redundancy for corporate customers. Otherwise a UMA phone using wifi N would also eliminate LTE and WiMax rendering 4G obsolete in urban areas before it's even here.
5G is apparently under development: 12.5Gbps technology for streaming HD video direct from a TV camera to the On-site broadcasting vehicle and on to the TV station. Great for recording sports events without cables...
