As a general rule, midi's are much softer than wav's. If you need a loud ring tone, use a .wav file, or imy's for a loud regular ringtone. I think the only phones worth having midi as ring tones are the new Samsungs. They sound great because they have a Yamaha sound chip which takes use of the full 256(I think) instrument set playing through 16 channels. So you see it doesn't always matter how many instrument you can play at the same time(16,24,40etc.), but also what sound chip it uses and the quality of the speaker of each handset. The 7650 has 24 channel polyphony btw, that may be one of the reasons why the sound is different from the P800(16). It's also normal that ringtones sound louder when the phone is ringing than just playing it in the audio player. And like Jplacson said, the midi and wav files can be altered(improved) on your PC with some programs. I find the P800 volume to be more than loud enough for ringtones and mp3's, but I'd never use midi's when I can use wav!

I personally find MIDI ringtones cheesy. Only a couple of people have personalized rings on my phone because they wanted to have their own ringtone when they called me...that's about it. I use an IMY file I made on my T68i as my regular ringtone. It cuts through any crowd, no matter how loud! (I heard it while I was at rock club w/ the band playing)
For SMS & MMS, I have customized voice WAV files.
I find it funny how they say you can "personalize" your ringtones, when everybody usually has the same ringtone! (Well, most people in the Philippines anyway) So when someone's phone rings, everyone still checks their phones!!! Kinda funny!

As an acoustic engineer I am well aware of the many ways these file types can be edited and manipulated to improve their volume. The number of channels and the chip used definitely makes a difference in sound quality of the samples but should not make a difference in sound level (volume).
Is the 7650 louder than the P800? In my experience, the 7650's sound level and frequency response are better than the P800 in an AB comparisson with the same file playing at maximum volume. Even the 6610 is louder.

Hehe...that's true. That's why I use wav's. I really like the default Oldfashioned(wav) ringtone in the P8! It's loud, gets some wierd looks and just sounds really cool, just like the oldschool counter-clockwise dialing land phones. Hmm.. was it clock-wise or counter-clockwise...?

Can you imagine a radio with the speaker designed in the back? A car stereo with the speakers placed in the trunk/boot? The P800 suffers from a serious design flaw; the speaker's at the back. Disastrous for a phone that claims to be a multi-media tool.

Fender concert amps have open backs to improve acoustic quality and reduce distortion. Car speakers are usually located at the back of the car, w/ the tweeters located around the rest of the vehicle. The best sounding laptops have a speaker located UNDER the laptop.
Anyway, that aside, I found that the P800 weird-speaker placement actually works best on a conference table, screen face up... the audio actually bounces off the table and gets magnified!
I don't know if this was intentional... but the speakerphone and other multimedia functions actually sound better in a conference room with this speaker placement.

You would`nt want it in your ear by accident would you.
Sounds are fuller when bounced off hard surfaces,
Cars DO have speakers in the boot for this reason,
Because the sound is reflected it means you get it in BOTH ears at a similar level which can only be acheived by placing it at the back.
People who know about accoustics angle their home hifi speakers to get the best reflection rather than aiming them at one point in the middle of the room which just looks neat but is often not the best sound.
A good example of this is a grand piano when in a concert hall the half open angled lid is the hard surface that the sound bounces off, without the lid the sound is worse & not as loud.
It`s the reason kids at school complain the p800 is not loud enough, as they are often in a large open area outdoors, this is where the p800 fails to give good sound reproduction on speakerphone.

As for the original topic, I have found the P800 to be louder than the 7650.

When I get my phone later this week (I hope), I will compare the 7650 and P800 in several ways.
Then I give you the results...it will be interesting!
