I've been looking at a
video-sample from Vivaz. I think the audio is
very low. Is this a known issue? Something that is fixed in a newer firmware?

When it comes to great video recording quality I would definitely go for a SE Vivaz, so crisp and crystal clear

I have been using SE Vivaz for a week or two.
I would say video recording is the "only" good point.

And the quest for the best video-recording phone continues, now running for quite a few years.
In my hunt for the phone I want, I bought
Vivaz Pro
Xperia Arc, Neo and Ray
Nokia N8
and I'm
tired!
Vivaz Pro just have
crap audio in video recordings, which renders the video-recordings
completely useless. Solution: None, throw it out. (Or if you insist on keeping it, then boost audio in all video-clips by at least a factor 4 in a video-editor).
Xperia Arc/Neo/Ray does the same, although not quite as bad, but bad enough to be annoying. Audio in all video-recordings has to be boosted 250% before it's usable. (First firmwares of Arc was ok though, but in later firmwares the microphone input level was lowered for some reason). Workaround: Flash your phone with software 3.0.1.A.0.145. You'll only have mono audio, but it'll be loud enough.
If you insist of having stereo-audio, then you must manually boost all audio 250% in a video-editor.
Nokia N8 is fairly good, but I was actually surprised to see that Arc/Neo/Ray actually does a better job regarding the picture. Arc/Neo/Ray gives more accurate colors. (I remember this also from earlier SE Aino - Nokia N82 comparison).
Audio in N8 is kinda like in N82. It's loud enough, but kinda has too much bass / inside-a-bottle-sound.
So in my current conclusion:
Arc/Neo/Ray is the best if you manually boost audio 250%
If you (understandable) are too lazy to do that, then Nokia N8 is the best.
(If you can settle for VGA resolution, Aino / Elm and the likes, is the best).
If you then have to consider the OS at the same time, then there can only be one winner: Arc/Neo/Ray.
How anyone can stand using Symbian shit is beyond me. So slow and un-intuitive.
"Next version is faster" is something I've been listening to forever,
and it's always a lie. Symbian is slow and annoying and it will never change. It's dying, so leave the f**k alone to die in peace.
Me? I think I'll be flashing my Ray to a previous firmware, and then forget about stereo audio. I've given up on Sony Ericsson to fix this. Any company taking so many years to get it right, will never get it right. That has become quite clear now.

From my experience the Nokia N8 and iphone 4 have the best video quality. As for SE the Arc has the best of their range but not a patch on Nokia or Apple. The latest phones with full HD I have no idea of. Samsung Galaxy is the best so i hear. If you want THE best video recording ever then for proper digital cameras the Sony HX7 & HX9v are superb quality in full HD AVCHD format the best out there. I have the Sony HX9v. Mobile phones are shit imo for recording video

Well I'm not after THE best video recording.
I'm only after the best video recording possible on a phone.
And what good is a good video recording, if you can barely hear the sound? It's useless. Therefor, Vivaz / Vivaz Pro is useless for video-recording. And Arc/Neo/Ray is close to useless too when updated with newer firmwares. (If you're running an old firmware, don't update!)
We can still hope that SE fixes this in a new firmware, but history shows us that's very unlikely to happen.
I have yet to try iPhone and other brands. I might some day.

The Samsung Wave GT-S8500 has the best HD video recording available, great color reproduction and awesome detail level.
See here
GSMArena Samsung Wave Video Recording
Since I own one and had the opportunity to test it against my brother's iPhone 4 and my other brother's Nokia N8 I can tell you the video recording on the Wave is the best I've seen in a phone.
Also the hardware is pretty powerful , you will not lose any frames.
On the down side the HD video recording takes more space compared to other phones, given the fact that the video compression is low for good quality so you need to buy a big capacity memory card. Cheers

And how is the audio volume in those video-recordings, compared to N8 and iPhone?
Everyone seems to completely ignore audio. But to me it's equally important as image quality. Too low audio renders the recordings useless, no matter how great the picture is.

The audio quality is the same as the iPhone 4's. It dosen't record in stereo like the N8 does but the audio recording is good , the mic has great sensibility and does not distort.
Edit: Also, I forgot to mention, the LED light is very strong and I mean VERY STRONG so there will not be any problems recording during night time.
