Why not buy a new one?\\n
Most council ones are hard wired into the buildings main supply and where they're fitted by the council and run on batteries. The occupier and the council have a responsibility to maintain them. The council should come out every so often to test all installed alarms and replace if needed. The tennent is responsible for reporting defects, and also checking and replacing the battery if not a mains powered alarm.
