With or without background services, that's not a good sign. No ATK shall be needed unless you have installed buggy apps,
Never used an ATK and haven't had any issues related to memorymanagement at all.

Oh, I manage my contacts on Gmail. I rarely enter a new contact or appointment on my phone directly. Everything is managed from Gmail. And my friends change phone numbers often... bad habit of prepaid (PAYG) culture here in the Philippines... everybody keeps hopping SIMs, it's annoying. So when they change their info in Facebook, I don't have to ask for their new number anymore or edit their entry
When I receive an email on my desktop for a new appointment, I just click accept and it syncs with my phone. I don't like having to manually sync calendars when a new appointment is made. I just manage all my appointments from my desktop/laptop
ATK is just there as a desktop widget in case certain apps hang or start eating too much memory. It's my Ctrl-Alt-Del ... or Apple-Option-Esc

Finally ... I'm happy now ... the phone rocks ... just need to be careful of what applications I download ...
Applications have too much access in the android system ...
