This is part of the MMC (MMS-C), the MMS management node in the operator networks.
Early releases of MMC (below 2.0) did not have device recognition feature built in, that's why device (MMS) adaptation does not work properly.
It all depends on the operator. When they buy latest MMC release from their supplier, you wouldn't encounter such problems.
The rest is proper configuration. Please use the "phone configs" as available e.g. on
http://www.sonyericsson.com/
(go on your country and select it from the top of the page)
or ask your operator to send you latest settings via OTA (over the air). This normally is a service free of charge.
