I have tried several SMTP servers and all give the same error on the same addresses. These settings work fine on a PC and on email via T-Zones. If someone has SMTP email working on R1D firmware and would like to send me a test msg at Microsoft, please send me a private message and I'll give you the address to test.
I still believe this is a weird firmware bug but need some verification/denial from another R1D user

I am owner of one of the UK's larger ISP's so i can give you a proper awnser to the SMTP issue!
As standard isp's will not relay for you unless you are using their dialup, the smtp will then see you as a trusted user based on your IP address
There are 2 other methods that can work, but these are still not very popular
1, pop before smtp, once you have checked you mail there is a window for sending, this is normally aprox 10 mins.. this method is getting more popular as Sun Micro are now using it as standard in the cobalt raq which is quite popular with small and budget isp's
2, is authentication by user name and passwd.. un fortunatly this is not very popular as the choice OS for isp's is linux running sendmail.. sendmail is stand alone and does not check user/pass, window is better for authentication but this OS is not so popular due to the high licence costs!
Any machine that just allows you to relay (an open relay) will quite quickly get found heavily spammed through, black holed, then is the owner has a decent bone in his body will secure it!
The best method is to ask your GSM provider if thay have an SMTP server for your use, as you are using thier IP transit you will be treated as trusted.. also it would be slightly quicker!

So maybe the best short term solution is to not select the "Send immediately" option, but to save in the outbox and then do a "Get&send"?

Awesome! Thank you. Send before Receive works, though is somewhat of a pain.
I configured Outlook exactly as my phone and guess what: it gave an error on the same addresses (something to do with rpchost I think but I didnt write it down).
So now I dont ever Send Immediately, but Save to Inbox, then later Get&Send. I sometimes get the error the first time, but the 2nd time it goes through! Thank you so much.
If I can get TMobile USA to give me their SMTP address info I can probably fix this the correct way.

Searley is no doubt correct. I also run an international email service whcih caters specially for mobile users (plug:
www.azooza.com and you can get an email address like
yourname@P800.biz) and the problem is 99% sure to be POP B4 SMTP.
As searley says, you will generally be automatically authenticated to send AFTER you have POP'd (requested a 'receive mail').
Cheers!

FYI TMobile USA claim not to have an SMTP server I can use. As the P800 is not officially supported by them, they have no interest in providing one.
As Amazon and Mobile Planet are about to sell P800 with T-Mobile plans I can only hope their support gets its act together soon.

Took me 3.52 seconds to find it
SMTP Server: myemail.t-mobile.com
And yes - most of my accounts are well secured; you have to send through the ISP/mobile operators' SMTP servers. Works fine when you do though. (O2 & Orange uk)

I have had more problems with this as well, but have finally figured it out and have not had a problem yet.
First Option
leave your incoming Pop settings the same and change your outgoing SMTP to those of your carrier. Mine is AT&T and this did not, whether I Pop'd before, after, during or whenever.
Second Option
go to
www.myrealbox.com and sign up for a free e-mail account, after successfully signing up, go back to your settings on your phone and do the following under the "Outbox" tab. . .
Outgoing server address = 192.108.102.204
Use SMTP authentication = check yes
Username = your username at myrealbox, just username, NOT
username@myrealbox.com
Password = your myrealbox password
Hope this works for you like it did me.
