US is behind, but I have noticed that the last two years they have done amazing steps forward and that they are slowly but steadly closing the gaps between them and Europe. Once GSM is more widely spread, and 3G is introduced I think that more divices are going to come. People in USA are using TDMA/CDMA (90% apx) so they are used with getting a divice from the carrier, so no big flexibility on that.
Also USA did a big mistake with the GSM frequencies, so they create more problems with that. Once most of the phone finally support GSM1900 as well, now the GSM 850Mhz comes to complicate things even more.

I do hope that even if USA is mostly cdma,it would catch up with the global standard which is GSM.However,present political factors hamper such.Take for example: US have plans of implementing a CDMA network in Iraq cos GSM is french and an unexpected ally wch didnt support USA/UK.The mere fact that most of the arab nations around Iraq use GSM.

The U.S. didn't have alot of choice in chosing frequences since the 800-900mhz bands were already taken. So more or less they were forced to use 1900mhz for gsm.
