They became big by flooding the market with inferior phones, selling at premium prices to give the impression of quality. And endless movie plugs.

@ppcrockar: the 7250 was released way ahead of t610 =) some people just couldn't wait. on the subject of the phone being inferior, then nokia must have a great warranty or has something that others don't for staying on the top this long (=

The reason that Nokia is as big as they are today is good marketing and the 3210/3310 phones. Simple phones that they have managed to sell for years, and still people buy this really old phone. They have never been in the frontline with new technology.
The 3210/3310 came out in the right time. When non-business people started to buy phones. The built-in antenna was what normal users wanted. Nokia phones has never been something special, just average phones with decent features.
Today they sell phones largely because it has the brand Nokia. All their phones are inferior and more expensive compared to the competition (except maybe for the 3650 though which is surprisingly low priced for being a Nokia).
I guess Ericsson is regretting that they didn't buy Nokia in the early days of mobile phones. Ericsson was actually offered to buy Nokia (if I remember correctly it was only the telecom part of Nokia). Nokia wanted to focus on tyres and rubber boots which were their main focus back then. But Ericsson wasn't intrested in the offer. Kind of a big mistake

Nokia actually had many firsts too. The Nokia 7110 was the first WAP phone, and probably also the first phone that locks up so hard that you have to remove the battery to reboot.
Just because the average Esato reader think a phone is featureless and expensive, doesn't mean the general public cares. Someone I know just got a Nokia 8850 Gold and was showing it off to everyone. I pointed out that it costs more than my Nokia 6610 and SE T300 combined, and either phone has way more features. But he pointed out to me that his 8850 is _gold_ colored, and people know it's expensive, and it gives him face to use it in public.

Marketing plays a big part, but an equally likely part is that their phones are probably the easiest to use for a normal user. They dont have too many extra keys, and their features, while not always the best, are in line with what the general public use.
Also, they have many "firsts". For example they had the 7650 with the first built in camera, it was a very good device at its time (even though it had very little memory).

nokia is more of a consumer marketing company while ericsson is more of an engineering company. simple as that. you want a phone focused on features, performance, innovation and engineering, then get an ericsson.
you want eye-catching, colorful designs, easy to use and relatively uncomplicated phones that you can personalize, get a nokia. nokia understands that most of the world is not composed of techhies, and that their demands of a mobile phone are really quite simple. they are very focused on consumer marketing and are extremely good at it. and that is why they will be hard to dislodge from the no. 1 spot.
ericsson, meanwhile, earns its money from network equipment and infrastructure. they are no. 1 in that field by a very long way. as they say, you place the call on a nokia but ericsson puts your call through.

It's kinda fun that this so called in Sweden "Finnkamp" even exist in the telecomindustri. But here it even gotten global. I thought it was just a swedish-Finland thing.... But here I can clearly see that despite that fact that SONY ERICSSON is at the moment just number 5 and Nokia number 1....Its still those companies folks talking about. And of course Motorola if someone really wanna talk about something bad.
I believe that the reason why NOKIA is that big today, is just because they did phones for all people, in a way. Thats why the same phone come again and again.... for instance 3210, that became 3310, 3330, 3410, 3510, 3510i, and so on. 8210, became 8310 and so on. Nokia is living on what people know and liked before, while SONY ERICSSOn is trying to get something new and refreshing. And that is actually paying off. In Sweden the NOkia dominans is over. Of course Nokia selling lots of cellphones, but they aint number one on our lists anymore, so i guess people whats new refreshing phones. People whant the get the meny fully covered like SONY ERICSSON and others copying.
So, I think the SONY ERICSSOn will be first number 4, then number 3...and if people want them to be, even number 1.

When the Mobile Phone market exploded with the introduction of PAYG in particular Ericsson focused on high level business phones where as Nokia read the market better and went for mass sales. Nokia's idea came off, everyone bought a Nokia (except me) and are now so used to the menu system etc they stick with them.
Sad but true.

@dragon
SE has actually fallen out of the Top 5 phone manufacturers. but they are planning to start releasing a more "full" line-up so lets hope they can regain their position from LG (!)
