For me, I find the quick dial is very handy with the flip on.
Just press 1 and OK.. you could do it even when you are driving... the tactile sensation just makes it so much easier.
I don't do it often, but when I need to (such as when my stoopid HCB-30 and my P800 suddenly decides they don't want to talk to each other...), the flip on tactile feel is a godsent.
Just my 2 cents

The flip is deteriorating the beauty, the stylish of this phone.
Its dumb, its outdate, its out of this world.
If you need protection, get a Nokia 5100 or dont even use a cell phone.
All those quick dial function is still usable without the flip, It called virtual filp.
Come one take off your mask. SARS is gone~~

Flip on definately. Dialing is easier and less chance of damage to the screen.

Flip off definitely; it's just a heavy piece of plastic that makes the phone look like a toy & you lose no functionality by taking it off. The only problems I have will hopefully be fixed in future versions of Tracker (or Active Desk, Handy Day etc). Firstly, as mentioned previously, the "Lock" should disable the touch screen (unlock using the jogdial sounds easy enough to me) & secondly, the Auto lock should be disabled during calls so you don't have to unlock the phone during calls to check the timer etc. Once these are fixed I won't even need to use the Virtual Flip! (These problems don't occur in FC mode) & l don't think I have actually physically dialled a number in the month I've had my P800, I have every number I ever call in Contacts & I call from there.
EDIT: & using a Brando + the case (& strap to pull ur P800 out quickly) = no chance of screen damage. (Brando also means no fingerprints)

Flip off. Form beats function. Just too cool with the flip off.

After 5 months of using it i have reverted to FLIP ON for ease of autolock when i close the flip & the fact i can feel actions without looking, its been on....then ....off ....then ...on, but on is more effective even if it looks a bit "undesigned".

Flip OFF
Looks much much better without the flip but on the other hands the battery life is almost halfed (my jacket keeps on touching the screen making the phone get out of the power saving mode and light up the LED's
Some very odd times you also experince the phone by itself calling your mates. not a single time after i bought Tracker
