Not enitrely true. Older GSM networks are generally on the 900Mhz band. Some of these now also include some cells on 1800Mhz (such as O2 in the UK). If you have an old sim card, it will speak to the 900 Mhz cells only ...

SIM cards have no effect whatsoever on the signal strenth. Unless you try with two different SIMs which have accounts on two different physical networks in which case you might obviosly get different reception levels.
The only differences you find between SIM cards are memory size (SIM storage memory), operator services (SIM app toolkit), and sometimes compatebility (I remember when my old panasonic refused to accept new type SIM)
