I aint seen anythin from any network that even comes close to the o2 online contracts. u may have to wait a bit longer or pay more for the handset though. in the long term its better to get a cheaper contract though cus think of all the money you'll save with all those free txts and wap minutes!

Upgrade on what, O2 online?
Whether you take a contract with SIM only or get a contract with a handset from them, the charges are the same. The upgrade prices are usually about the same as the prices on the website, though may be £10-£20 higher in some cases. Depending on your spend, you may be able to lower the price of handsets on upgrade, but it depends on who you talk to really, and luck of the draw.

and say when I want to upgrade the phone, say to a z1010 I can get it at a upgrade price?

That's what i meant- you can get the sim only if you want, and after 12months it'll just be as if you had a contract with a handset, and you'll get the same upgrade prices. I can't promise the prices will be any good, but they'll be the same as everyone else on O2 online!
I wouldn't count on the Z1010 being released on many networks though - as a 3G phone, they probably won't even look at it until they have their own 3G networks up and running. It'll be a SIM free job, or else buy on '3', presuming they release it.
