To see if the cable works, you have to go into Accessories -> Communications -> HyperTerminal
1. "Cancel" when prompted for a new connection.
2. File -> Properties
a. Connect Using : select the COM port of your cable
b. Configure: set port speed to 9600
c. "OK"
3. You now get a black window. type "ATZ" without the quotes. It should return with "OK", then try ATI , ATI1 , ATI2 ... etc. and it will show you all the goodies. If the system reponds with information, the cable and the connection are good.
You can aslo install the phonebook and text message manager (for T65... the synchronization package for non-outlook users). Use that program to "initialize" the phone and then do your dial up after.

Thankyou ESTOR.
I've used hyperterm to connect to my phone successfully and so I know that at least it's not the cable
I'll have a play with the other software and see if that helps.
Thanks again for the replies!

If you go for IR, I recommend the Bafo BF-120
www.bafo.com.tw instead of MA620. Way fewer problems for the BAFO.

Hi,
I think you need an software upgrade. I made one today and suddenly the phone answers to OBEX "get" requests as it should (and OBEX is the protocol phone sync software uses on modern phones). As you have HyperTerm working, do a: "AT+CGMR" (w/o qotes) and you should get an answer looking like:
R1F005 CXC125425
(the CXC is the Ericsson software identification number, and the R thingie is the version of it).
Everything below R3 is a nono. The OBEX server (the embedded binary http'ish file server found on most modern handheld devices) is thorougly broken on older versions. The current version (today) is R3B003, which has a working OBEX implementation.
To upgrade, locate your nearest service point using
www.sonyericsson.com, it only takes about 15 minutes to flash and is well worth it (it's in this site's FAQ, i read it yesterday and can verify that it works, although the service point search function does not handle swedish characters correctly, which is rather funny, as Ericsson... well you know

.
Do send over your whole phonebook and anything else you want to keep before upgrade though, which brings me to the next thing, IrDA... The IrDA interface of the phone allows for phone initiated transfers to PC (at least if you have WinXP, haven't tried win98) and back. Sending data from the phone via the data cable cannot be done (if you try to initiate from the phone that is). In combination with the OBEX bug, that means you have no way of backing up your phonebook properly before upgrading (if you cannot find a friend with working IrDA interface), as the PC cannot initiate the transfer. One option is to simly just store the phonebook to the SIM and then read it back after upgrade, but that means loosing email addresses and truncation of long names in contact list. If that's OK, then it's a simple solution.
I agree that the BAPU USB dongle works well enough. I have it (I've been through the same thing as you lately, the only difference is that I'm trying to write my own sync software, so I was thinking everything was a fault of my own software until I realized that no software whatsoever was talking to my phone...). It also works with my Palm after i lowered the transfer rate to 57600 (using device manager and advanced options for the IrDA device). I haven't got it to work under linux yet, but that can be due to USB problems rather but the device itself.
Good luck!

That's a telltale sign that your cable is NOT a data cable and doesl NOT transfer data.
