Hi Phil,
That's right - for my VodafoneGPRS data account, the APN is wap.vodafone.co.uk. Do I need the data APN? If so, how do I set this?
So if you reckon I should connect using the Voda GPRS data account, how should I modify the following:
1. Connect using = ntl (VodafoneGPRS?)
2. Protocol = POP3
3. Inc. server = pop.ntlworld.com (62.253.162.50?)
4. Incoming port = 110
5. Mailbox = username
6. Password = xxxxxx
7. Outgoing server = smtp.ntlworld.com (62.253.162.40?)
8. Outgoing port = 25
9. Email address =
username@ntlworld.com
10. Download = Headers+text
Progress? I've been moving backwards all day!
Cheers,
Steven.

To create a data account (which you will need for anything on the internet) use the APN 'Internet' without the quotes. All the other settings can be the same as the WAP data account. The dial up should also work. I have three dial up accounts which all work (Freeserve, Vodafone and Wanadoo in France). You should remove the DNS entry you have and leave it blank. Also set dial type to analogue and data rate to 9.6k.

Yes you need to use the 'internet' APN. On O2 you have to contact them and ask them to enable this on your account before you can use it but I think with vodafone you can just go straight ahead and connect.
Sometimes this can be more expensive thatn the standard wap APN which is why some poeple use the GSM dialup - slower but cheaper.
Once you have that working you need to edit your mailbox settings.
If you are usingt URLs then a DNS address could help you in the long run. If however you use the IP addresses (recommended) then you can get rid of the DNS address.
You will also have to change the SMTP server to the vodafone smtp server which i think is mail.vodafone.net (212.183.156.229).
Regards,
Phil.

Right guys!
I edited the APN of the VodafoneGPRS data account to 'internet', then renamed the data account.
My ntl email account connects using this edited/renamed GPRS profile, using DNS for the server entries (and the mail.vodafone.net entry for SMTP - I may set this back to smtp.ntlworld.com as a trial). IT WORKS!! (I even set up a BTInternet account to get my old mails until the account's killed.)
I then used the WAP configurator to send a new VodafoneGPRS to my phone. GPRS wap works with this account.
Thanks a million to all in this thread!
Steven.

Glad to hear that it works

.
The reason you have to use the vodafone smtp server is because ISPs stop users from sending mail from the servers if they haven't dialed in on one of their network dialups.

And so Phil, we're back to what was the crux of my problem; it's for this reason that I resorted to BT dial up for my BT account, and so figured I needed ntl dial-up for an ntl account.
Thanks again,
Steven.

OK then - same woes, this time on the wife's T39m.
I get the error 'GPRS parameters not supported' - GPRS is enabled on the account, and I have used GPRS for wap before....
The setup is the same as for my T68i, except using the T39m option on the

configurator...
Wassup?!

Ok, with regards to the SMTP server I dont hink you quite understand how it works. Although we have set you up with a vodafone smtp server this will not stop you from sending emails. Recipients will still see it coming from your NTL email address and they will still be able to reply to that email. We are simply re-routing the orignal email through another server.
As for your GPRS problem, are you sure you are using the same data account as the one you used to surf wap? The error sounds like the typical one you get when you try to connect to GPRS but have not had it enabled on your account.
Regards,
Phil.

Hi - I *am* with you on the SMTP issue. But, how about this;
The BT account is a free one, and therefore, it's 'required' by BT that a dial-in via BT number be used to access it; no dial-in after 3 months and kaboom! Closed.
The ntl account on the other hand is only available through subscription to a service - that done, I imagine that ntl isn't bothered how I access the account.
So saying, my theory here is flawed as my test mail send failed - as it did with mail.vodafone.net & 212.183.156.229. Hmmm - receive works...
As for the GPRS matter on the T39 - GPRS was enabled, but I've since changed the tariff to a lower one - maybe the GPRS got reset? (However, the GPRS bar is dark, not grey meaning the phone is GPRS-on).
Cheers,
Steven.

Ah, now I see what your problem with the BT one is. As you say, the only way you can fix that is to dial in on a BT dialup but I have a better idea: email everyone you know telling them your new NTL email address. Then you dont have to worry about the BT one.
As for the 'sending failed', I just semi-guessed the smtp address for vodafone. If you have a dig/google for it then I am sure you will find the correct SMTP address.
And the GPRS, I dont know. Are you sure you are not trying to use a data APN on an account which only has access to WAP GPRS?
Regards,
Phil.
