Make a backup wich u already have done and if u want 2 restore selective then rename ur backup to .zip extract the files u need like contacts.cdb and ur mail directory \system\mail wich contains ur sms
with the procedure down here u can then put those 2 backon ur phone and it will be nice and clean without any crap on it just ur contacts and sms will be back
(U can do this only when u acces the phone with pc file manager in flight mode that way the contact.cdb is not protected
Start the program PC FILE MANAGER ( u can use a free evaluation copy - download from my-sybmian)
again START making a new backup, BUT When you see the P800 saying "backup in Progress" Cancel the Backup. BUT DONT START THE PHONE, LEAVE IT ON THE CRADLE AS IT IS.
Doing so allows you to USE the PC File manager to control the P800 and be able to copy what ever u need. )

u can copy the contact.cdb to ur computer, then u might place it back after u master reset the mobile..do u have pc file manager?if u have, 1st, u run the backup..while the mobile is in backup, u r able to copy n paster watever in the mobile.so while the backup is in progress..u just go to copy the contact.cdb by using pc file manager, after succeed copy the contact.cdb, u can stop the backup progress.u wud find that the contact.cdb isn't 0kb.so u might then master reset ur mobile.after that, u have to backup ur mobile again.Again, this is for paste the contact.cdb by using pc file manager.then u will have ur old contact list in ur master resetted mobile.
hehe..tell me if im wrong.

@pawanr
According to SE there is no difference between those two.
@Yoeppie

Hi, there is a difference between master reset and format c drive , master reset appeares to remove the apps, files etc ,but leaves loads of bits of apps etc all over your phone ....format c drive restores it back like new with none of the crap left on ..have done this myself several times and if you want a clean phone to start with do a restore c drive ...hope this helps

ya ofcourse there is a diff between formating c drive and a master reset . format c drive will remove all app installed on ph+all system files and oprating system too..... so if u r going for format c:\ then get ready for a updated version r2f coz u will have to go to SE ppl

Well now there are two contradicting answers.
If i do a "Format Internal Drive" will it remove all app installed on ph+all system files and oprating system too, and then i have to go to SE to get it fixed?
Or if If i do a "Format Internal Drive" it will restores it back like new with none of the crap left on, basically as i got the phone new??
If i wanted to start from scratch, not restore any backups, basically make the phone new as i got it on Day 1, is it better to format internal drive or a master reset?

Dont worry u can do a master reset or a format both will gave u same results dont be afraid of loosing ur system files cause they are on the rom drive wich u cant reset nor format so ur phone will be clean and up and running

Yes u wil erase all data from ur c:(internal drive) and if u wish from ur d:(Duo drive) but not from ur a:(Rom drive) and z:(olso Rom drive) after the format of c: when the phone starts it will put back all files needed from the rom drive and u wil end up with a nice clean as new phone
and before u ask have u done it yes i have done it already twice just to end up with a nice and clean system with all residue files removed
