Hey mate, im in nz, and gprs is awesome here for several reasons....! i strongly recommend getting an nz sim when youre here; you'll be very surprised at whats available.

Well I'm in the "bush" - 110 km from Melbourne, using Optus. GPRS works fine in all the rural areas here (Western Victoria) and in Melbourne. I used GPRS like crazy when I got my P800, but my first months bill still only came to A$8.57 - which Optus refunded anyway (a freebie). I doubt you'll have any problems, but bring your laptop anyway. (My laptop works perfectly (via infrared) with the P800 for internet and e-mail access - cheap thru Optus at 30cents for 10 minutes after 8pm).

at the moment I pay £30 a month (AU $75) for unlimited gprs which will work in Oz & NZ too hopefully. I won't use it that much, just a bit of MSN, ICQ and email, but also to transfer the millions of photos im gonna be taking

When you say I'll be amased at the features of a NZ sim card, what do you mean? Does it ward off Kanga-road-kill?
