When a number is given up by a person (at the end of a contract for example) a period of "holding" of 6 months has to pass before the number goes back on the system for giving out to a new customer.(this is to insure that a person on holiday or working abroad can get their number back if they want, even after giving it up) so if the number you want is in a holding period, you can get the date its holding period finish's and have it swopped onto your acount by phoning on the day, PROVIDED the old owner hasn't requested it back in the meantime.
Just thought some people may have been interested to know how the system works.
