I still use my original battery for my T68 purchased October 2001 and just leave it connected to the charger whenever i can... It has outlasted most people's batteries considering that they bought their units way later than mine.
I am a heavy user for voice and data.

Not quite wrath - the first time you charge the phone you should leave it on charge a couple of hours after the charge cycle appears to have been completed. The charging circuits aren't completely turned off at the 'end of charge' and the trickle charge is required to ensure that the whole cell is completely charged as the battery's circuitry won't be properly calibrated initially (and will indicate to the charger that charging is 'complete' before it actually is). The manual points out that you should leave the phone on charge for about 5 hours or so for the first charge IIRC. Charging after that should only take a couple of hours at most.

The charging circuts are completely cut off, since overcharing a Li-Po battery can severely damage it. Additionally it doesn's say anywhere in the manual that the first time you charge you should charge for longer then 4 hours

Then the first two-three times let the phone run down completely until it shuts off by itself. Don't worry, this won't hurt the battery, the phone will shut off before the battery is completely discharged.
This trains the battery and tells the phone's battery meter how much power the battery actually has.
You'll notice an increase in battery life during this process. After that, charge the phone when it's at something like 30-50%, it won't hurt it if it runs down completely once in a while.
EDIT:
It's better for your battery to immediately recharge it when it's run down completely.

Where did you get the 12 hours from? That number is from 5 years ago used Ni batteries.
The phone does know when the battery is full. It has to. That's one big MUST HAVE with Li-Po batteries, you have to know when it's full.

I've always laugh when some wize seller seriously trying to convinced me that I have to charge a battery 3 x 12 hours, this is so sad, 21st century and they are still living in the past, so sad ... just plug it and unplug it wherever and whenever you want, it will last for years and after that you will sell your outdated model and buy a new one with fresh battery.
