Blue laser is smaller wavelength therefore you can fit small pits onto the disks enabling you to fit one hell of a lot more stuff in the same space.
Should we stop buying DVDs, cause theyre not really that great.
Can hold 47GB if I remember rightly. Technology only just available in Japan (Sony leading the way as usual), so will be a while until it arrives in Europe. Would not give up on DVD's just yet.

Your going to buy a, oh, I don’t know...$100+ blue laser disk with about 10 films on it? I don’t think so. Get it scratched (which can happen very easily) and your out a lot of money. This blue laser might take over mass storage, but not movies. You think you will rent a blue laser disk from a rental shop with 90% of it empty? What the point of that? Do you think movies will get cheaper because you can fit more on a single piece of plastic? Nope. DVD's are produced for a matter of cents; it’s the movie copyright etc. that makes a DVD about $15
You don’t think the 48 hour DVD will come of anything? Your at a rental store and you have a choice of a regular DVD and a 48 HOUR DVD.. (or a blue laser disk for that matter).. you are going to choose the DVD that you don’t have to return the next day... never get a fine again.
Your traveling, and you want to watch a film in your hotel.. Why not a 48hour DVD?
Blue laser will never take over DVD, it just doesn’t make sense. I can see it taking over storage mediums, but not entertainment mediums. What if you wanted to lend a friend a Movie you bought… no wait, the rest of your collection is on that blue laser disk too…
If your logic is correct, we should all stop buying Music on CD's. After all, there’s a technology out now called DVD and it can hold 10 times the amount of information. Just think... CDs will become obsolete… We should stop buying CDs, they aren't that great anyway.

you miss the point of blue ray. it will be used for video, but not for a 48 hour film. the idea is that you can watch virtually uncompressed HDTV film of far better quality than blocky DVD.

99% of people do not have a system that the uncompressed format would make a increase in quality... Unless you have a huge huge screen.
My point is that "48 hour" DVDs will not go away just because there is another meduim out there that can hold more.
