I have an unlocked one with an at&t sim. There's an indicator for me.

Do you think that the lack of GPRS indicator or Tmobile's software could also cause a drain on the battery life?

I am using T-mobile with a T616 unlocked Cingular branded phone with original Cingular software, but using T-Mobile GPRS settings via SE's wap configurator. I DO have the blue GPRS indicator above the reception bars (like how it was with my T68i).
Also, it is always there, regardless of if i'm loading a page or not. If I turn the phone on initially, the reception bars are there with the BLUE GPRS indicator lines showing empty; a few seconds after the phone has booted, the GPRS indicator fills up completely solid blue on top of the green reception bars.
So I guess this proves that reception = gprs

ok I talked to a t-mobile guy and apparently what t-mobile did when they ordered t610 is that they asked SE to take the GPRS indicator off the phone since for t-mobile the regular gsm indicator is same as the GPRS indicator. In other word, if you have the signal to talk, then you can use GPRS. For that reason, they though they do not need 2 different indicators for the same thing. That's why T-mobile t610s don't have that indicator.
I have been in several situations where I could use the GPRS connection to send and receive email on my PPC, where there was no voice signal. I have seen where the indicator (at least on the T68) changed strength, even when no voice signal was present. I just purchased a T610 today and have no data signal. A matter of fact, I have not data at all. This is the first phone I have transfered my SIM to that did not get data. I have phoned TM about this, but this will take awhile.

sschwar4,
let us know but I bet somebodu at tm will end up telling the same thing that I was told... that t-mobile version of of the firmware does not have the gprs signal. I'm going to europe next week and will use local sim cards there so we'll see if I get the indicator there but I doubt it. Anyways ti does not bother me anymore.

I think there were lots of problems with the phone I had. I spend half a day on the phone with TM. Never did gprs or t-zones to work. So, I was waiting for them to get back with me and tried a BT call. Static, I have never had static on a BT call. The firmware date was 7/03. Based on what I found, there are 3 newer firmware revisions. I think they did the same thing as the T68i. The newer customer firmware did not work and data setups were erased as soon as you powered down the phone. Not in this case, but something like it. I think I will try to find a 8/03 version.

I found another dealer that had the t610s. This one worked before I even left the store. Tzone and GPRS, just like it should. There is a crackling sound when you use the BT headset, but it is not heard on the other end. A little bothersome, but with all the other features, I can live with it. Reception is much better than the T68i and menus are much quicker. Not much memory though. Great phone so far.

Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem.
I opened
this thread in the General Discussion forum and it seems like we have figured out the problem. Now all we need is a solution.
On a side note I would like to add that I can use POP3 on my T610 via T-zones GPRS while I couldn't use it on my T300 before. So it's either the T610 has different GPRS settings that allow POP3 and SMTP or T-zones has changed since the last time I tried to use e-mail on my T300.

T-mobile has changed there T-zones plans to free basic with normal plans and then to $4.99 with POP3 email then to $9.99 with IMAP4 email for Business users. They all are Unlimited usage. Free one is to T-zones site only and others you go any other sites outside of T-zones for WAP. So if you are new depending on what you want to use on T-zones these are your choices.
