i've been in that page too, where i was asked to choose between 32-bit and 64-bit. i chose 32.
only windows xp and windows 2000 are affected by blaster. (though some sites say win98 is also affected).. but winME is definitely exempted from that... based from what i read around yesterday morning.
hehe, but i wasnt hit with it. the patch that fixes the flaw (blocks the entry of the Blaster virus) was in my PC since the last week of July..

That blaster-thingy virus only works on NT based systems...
And from a tech site I read that there were two secret messages inside the virus one saying:
-Billy Gates, why did you make this possible? Stop earning money and correct your software!!!
and the other saying:
-I just want to say LOVE YOU SAN!!!

Why not just change one computer to Apple now? You'll still be able to use the majority of files on both (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Photoshop etc.) and you'll still have access to your PC while you get familiar with the Mac. And it'll give you time to evaluate what software you'd need to get on the Mac.

Of course Macs could be targetted by virus writers. But you're also missing the fact that their methods and motivations would need to change too.
For starters there simply aren't the security vulnerablities in Mac OS X that exist in Windows. Compare the number of security related patches released by
Apple this year (6) to those released by
Microsoft (lost count at 50+).
Also, there aren't the virus delivery methods in Mac OS X. The majority of viruses/worms on Windows propagate via vulnerabilities in a users email address book. This simply doesn't work on a Mac.
Secondly, it seems many Windows users 'dislike' Bill Gates and Microsoft and want to get back at him for producing bug-ridden products. Hence the apparent motivation behind the current MSBlast virus. Mac users by comparison are generally more loyal and don't try to bring down the company who makes the software/OS they choose to use.

JoolsG3 I agree with you 100%, I am already looking out for a laptop mac, just not sure which to get. Do they all now come with bluetooth built in. You say that all my current software will work on it, are you sure. I know my SE stuff will work but I thought they came with their own version of word and excel. I know these are compatable with MS stuff. As for the Bill Gates thing, it seems strange that most previous viruses have not been so directly aimed at MS themselves. It is true there must be an awful lot of people out there who hate MS for their buggy software, and maybe this puplic attack on them, showing just how vunerable their software is may change their ways. This still will not stop me from going mac.

But you'd have to get hold of these Mac versions of your PC applications. The Mac can read the majority of PC documents no problem - you just need to know what programs can open what.
Apple have a good guide for switching from PC to Mac
here. Moving files from Mac to PC and back is easy with a USB Flash Disk.
Your
phone will work a treat with Mac OS X. It's so unbelievably easy to sync, transfer stuff, set-up Bluetooth etc.
Bluetooth is built-in on some PowerBook model and available as an optional extra on others. Check the
UK Apple Store for details. All the PowerBooks are
rumoured to be getting updates very soon.

I have the virus, too :S Not impressed. Any idea where it comes from?
I also want to move to Apple but have just been given a brand new Dell Inspiron Windows XP notebook as a gift, so not much luck, really... Still, am sure I'll be more than happy with that.
