Tried it again outside (free from my 2.4 GHz home -- WiFi, cordless, etc), and it works OK for outgoing calls.
Once BT is "connected", the connection seems to "drop" -- looks like this is "normal", as rdnymllnsktr states above. Once a call is placed, it fires up... presumably this is to save on battery life. Still unclear as to why it was disconnecting a lot yesterday.
