Do you know when they're axing Wildfire? I'll miss her dulcet tones...

I have had the same experience with the refurbed phones.

Like I said, I don't think they are becoming "a money hungry company" It quite simple, they have been boreing the extra costs for the features that Orange users assume are 'standard' when they are far from it. As a result of not advertising this, and hence, not reaping the benefits in customer numbers, they are now modifying their business model.

It's a case of choosing; low margins and high customer volumes or high margins and low customer volumes. Orange opted for low margins but their marketing failed to produce the necessary high volumes to be successful.

-The simplification goes further than money, it's also about being memorable and knowing that you are only incurring costs from 3 simple price bands - instead of the hundred different minutely rates before

-The above (margin vs. volume) explains the 'your plan' tariffs.

-Wildfire is so crap, I got her activated from day 1 and get annoyed with her everytime I call her! She will be axed from my phone even if Orange change their minds

-Can't say that I have used every phone, but SE should sort themselves out and bring out a fix!

- Yes they are "trying to ween people off the good old tarrifs like ED50" and that is why I am hanging on to it for dear life (it's on my second line) but again it relates to the above.

"And there's more - it's all negative" tell me and I'll explain it away.

May I just say that, if you have line 2 and you get a message on it in the day (e.g. peak time, when it's not free) if you didn't have wildfire (like me) you would be able to access your line 2 messages through your line 1 minutes.

@Fritz

Well, she's being ringfenced - they were going to give her the chop last month but now they're just not taking new subscribers on board.

They're currently trialing a new thing - "voice activated dialing". Apparently it's a lot like WF but without the voicemail stuff - and of course those humorous quirks...

MOOOOOOOO!!!

OK - I think we'll have to agree to differ.

Orange, along with all of the other mobile phone operators in the UK (excl. Virgin) are hiking prices in response to many things. One being the cross network termination charge cuts which Oftel enforced recently, but the most significant is the 3G licenses.

Compared to any mobile phone company 2 years ago, Orange is not offering good value for money now. That's not the way it should be.

Explain away this...

If you want to change tarrif to OVP Virgin, and you're in contract, you have to pay off a subsidy for the phone. This is fair enough, as Orange subsidise their phones much more than Virgin, as Orange charge line rental.

When Orange matched Virgin's tarrif originally, the subsidy was £10 per month.

About a year ago this was raised to £15 per month.

Roughly six months ago, subsidies on mobile phones were cut - this was a move to make mobile phone prices more 'realistic' (higher that is... one would have thought that line rental would have come down too, but no).

Shortly after this, the monthly subsidy for Virgin was RAISED to £25!!

This defies all logic.

But of course if you're insistant in believing that Orange employees have always been hard done by and (until now) have been living in slums eating bread and cabbage soup, then how am I going to convince you??!

Like I say, maybe we need to agree to disagree

Edit:

I happen to have a L1 tarrif which gives me free answerphone, so I can check L2 answerphone any time for free. Also, as the P800 isn't L2 compatible, I've set it up with calling cards so that I can use L2 with wildfire - e.g. it calls my answerphone, presses *, puts in my L2 number and passcode, then tells WF to make a call, THEN puts through the number I want to call in DTMF tones and WF calls it!

This way I can still use my ED50 even though the P800 doesn't have L2.

As an employee of Orange I'd like to defend their decision to axe Wildfire. Like equity points and free Care, this was removed as a contract plan option because not enough people were optimizing the service to make it worthwhile and the company were actually losing money. The Care plan has been to the benefit of millions of customers over the past couple of years and, excess not being considered, was the best value network deal compared to pricy schemes from The Link and CarphoneWarehouse (28 pound for 3 months!) with unbeatable customer service. 24 hour FREE customer care line? Where else can you call free of charge when you configure your WAP settings wrong at 11pm, or have your phone stolen at 3am?

While I do not agree with a lot of their recent changes -- 18 month upgrade, excess fees -- I do understand why they are being actioned, and Orange have always treated their upgrade customers better than other networks -- they currently charge upgrades at the same rate as a Talk 120, for one thing. They have spent millions on new Phone Trainer advertising plan and have put a lot of time into aftersales care, which other networks often don't do. They offer you the world to start with, but screw you over as soon as you're signed up for a year of your life!

Hey guys......its no big deal! after a year your phone gets "nicked" or "accidently broke" or "lost" or "set on fire"....u simply pay £15 u get a new phone...latest software etc....if it aint in production u get a phone to the same value or the follow up phone...no problem.

I used to have phone insurance with the Link Mastercare...they used to charge either £15 or £20 for there insurance on all claims...so its no loss really.

Please not that im not encouraging anyone to make false claims on there phones for own benefits as this is lawfully illegal and can carry penalties.

Beleive me, I'm all in favour of the excess, as long as it's not charged on faulty phones.

I used to love Orange, they were by far the best network. Ever since Hans Snook stepped down, things have gone downhill.

Orange now offers very little over other networks, whereas it used to offer loads.

Wildfire is being ringfenced because (if my source is correct) the company that created her and supported her has gone bust, although I do agree that she wasn't as successful as she might have been

Equity wasn't used much because people never knew about it - maybe it should have been axed, but it would have been nice to see something to replace it.

Everyphone on the other hand is absolutely vital for some people, but Orange are withdrawing it from everyone except for "Business Solutions Customers" so that reliability will increase. Make of that what you will.

Grrr...

£50 buybacks on new connections for ANY old, digital phone?
£75 for introducing a new customer?
500 texts and 200 cross-network minutes for 30 pound a month, available online?
Free TimeOut travel card memory cards for SPV customers, travel adapters, Text Saver packs?
1000 free texts a year for new customers?
50% extra minutes Orange-to-Orange and landlines?
24 hour free customer service?
Unlimited WAP access for £4 a month?

I think that these are great offers for customers, but it's all up to personal preference, I guess.
