JPEG compression in itself is a "lossfull" compression. It removes content from the image (for example, similar coloration areas get changed to same color and grouped, or patterns are created - in other words you get less detail). Some programs remove more content to get smaller file sizes, other programs use better algorithms so they can remove less content and get the same size. There is actually a big difference in final result when using different programs, but the basic way they operate is exactly the same.

hmmm... ok... guess I missed that point somehow... though I think I will still play around with all this to make myself happy.
thanks for claryfing this.

I found
this page about jpeg. It has some
comparisons as well.

ok.. fair enough. that seems to explain it quite well..
but going back to using the JPG compressor mentioned earlier (or any other program than can compress to a high level), since content is permanantly lost, shouldn't this mean that the T610 raw file will be correspondingly smaller with higher compression?

The detail is perminently lost, but the area remains. Lossless bitmap formats (such as raw), don't care about detail since
all the pixel information for the area is saved. For example in JPEG format a 128x128 pure black square will be a much smaller file then a 128x128 all-the-colors-of-the-rainbow; but in raw/bitmap both files will be exactly the same size. So, while the ammount of detail in the picture is a large factor in JPEG compressions, it makes absolutely no difference in bitmaps, that's why transferring the image back to T610 will pretty much take up the same ammount of memory.

One would think that by using bmp files instead of jpg you would somehow overcome this "bug" but the phone doesn't accept them

but bmp files are much, much bigger in the first place

But you said that the phone decompresses the jpg so you end up with 2 copies of the pic in phone, one jpg and one bmp (maybe another uncompressed format). So if you would be able to get rid of the jpg you could save space. Weird thinking....
