I ordered a T610 on Orange PAYG today for pick-up next Tuesday. I don't suppose it support backlight to be turn off as far as I'm concern unless I'm very wrong.
@ btw, does anyone knows where I can unlock it cost effectively in London? Thanks.

I've never had a problem reading text on the screen in bright sunlight, admittedly the screen limits camera and hence the viewfinder visibility, but never the screen.Reading and sending texts is not a problem, nor navigating the menu's.

Just put your hand around the screen or put it under your jacket. A decent case will make it as readable as any other phone. Bright light is damaging for anything with a screen or electrical so the phone is no different
