Hi UKChalky,

When I went into CPW at Cribbs Causeway they done the firmware upgrade on my T610 for free.

However, they totally cocked it up and installed the Vodafone software onto my Sim Free phone.

I would avoid that CPW if I were you - as they don't have a clue.

Mark.

Hmm - seriously, check that they WON'T install the VodaLive firmware, as other posts (sorry, my 'masseur powers' of seek/quote other threads is weak today) discussed the irreversible nature of this, with the exception of flashing to a higher firmware (i.e. retrograde flashes even, won't remove the Live junk).

But I'm probably wrong.

Either way, I found CPW to be excellent....

I went to CPW at Cribbs today to get my T610 (still running on R1A) upgraded to the newest firmware and got told that they would only do it if my phone was faulty! I told the assistant that he was wrong and to go and see his supervisor. He came back a few minutes later, and without admitting he was wrong said they would do it for me, as if they were doing me a favour.

He then went on to tell me that I was only allowed one free upgrade, and after this one any future upgrades (even if still within the first 12 months) would be chargeable. Now I wasn't sure if this was true so I didn't bother arguing, and by this time (along with the stories I'd read on here previously) I had already decided that I didn't want to leave my phone in the hands of these people anyway. Was he right here or not? I suspect he was talking out of his a*** again.

After all of this, he then tells me that they can't do my upgrade anyway because the service bloke is only in on Saturdays. I mean why couldn't he have told me this when I first went up the counter? Besides, anyone that knows that branch of CPW will know that it is very busy all week so surely it would be worth their time training a few members of staff at least on how to upgrade software if not as full service engineers.

So I'm back home now. Still with slow java and without my new sms and camera shortcuts that I wanted. And I'm not too happy about it.

I know my experience is not as bad as other people have had from them, but it's just another example of there incompetence. The problem is that I really want this latest firmware version and I don't have access to any other service centres so I guess that I'll have to go back there one Saturday soon and lump it.

I’ve just e-mailed SE asking them if what he said was correct or not, so that next time I can go in with a copy of their reply to show CPW if required. One of my pet hates is store assistants in technology stores that haven’t got a clue what they are taking about. For people like many of us who have our finger on the pulse and know otherwise it’s not so bad, but what about all the people that don’t know anything and just believe what the assistants tell them?

Ed

Oh yeah - and one of my mates went there with his P800 a couple of weeks ago too, and he said it took them 3hrs to upgrade it for him!!! What are they doing back there?

Its a recent thing, i was informed se have taken off cpw the authorized list. Something to do with cpw claiming they can only perform the upgrade if you bought the phone from them and charging silly money for the service. This message was posted from a R520

The way I see it is, if you have a problem with your phone within the warrenty period that is not beond the control of se (dropped, water damage, etc) then the work should be free, though walking into a serice centre and demanding a software upgrade because you know one is avalable sould be charged for. You sould be able to think of a warrenty "fault" to take the phone to service and they always flash the phone with the latest firmware if it has visted them...

So we need to just find a fault with the phone and then we can get it for free?

We can just find out on here what the bugfixes are. Then go into CPW complaining about a bug.

The phone hanging when recieving texts from the internet springs to mind...

After reading the comments within this thread about CPM not beine authorised to perform software upgrades, I decided to phone SE to check.

The agent informed me that "technically" getting your phone upgraded by CPW "might void your warranty." In other words, if anything goes wrong with the upgrade and you decide to send your phone to SE for repair - they *can* refuse to repair/replace it under warranty IF you got the job done CPW.

I intend to write to CPW to get this clarified.

If it is the case then I believe that CPW should inform customers of this BEFORE performing the upgrade.

What does anyone else think?

@ Sonyericsson-man

We still use that particular CPW (cribbs, bristol) because there isnt another service center within an hours drive.

I for one dont really want to send my phone away in the post.

After this CPW branch arguing about whether they should even give me an upgade at all (never mind a free one), I contaced SE asking for the facts ... here is what they said:

SE: We can confirm that Sony Ericsson warranty covers for a repair or replacement of the handset, subject to your handset is faulty. Therefore Sony Ericsson do not supply free software upgrades for the first 12 months. Please review the terms and conditions of your warranty, found in the back of manual.

Hmm, it seems that they don't have give us free upgrades at all. And those that are getting them are purely on the good grace of the Service Centre. On the other hand it's not hard to make up a problem that warrents an upgrade, for example I can just say that my Java speed is too slow to run applications smoothly so I need it.

I also went onto ask about Service Centers in the Bristol area since CPW has proven to have a very dodgy track record:

SE: We can clarify there is no service centres within the Bristol area. If you require for handset to be repaired or replaced, the handset would need to be sent to the Sony Ericsson advanced repair centre 'Celestica'.

So that clears that up. Anyone who is getting their phones updated at Cribbs CPW (and I assume any other branch natiowide) is, strictly speaking, invalidating their warrenty. So if you need 'proper' repairs from SE in the future they can quite rightly refuse to do them becuase you've had your phone upgraded at a non-official Service Center. In their eyes it will be no different than if you'd done it at home yourself.

Obviously it's infurating that there is evidentally no Service Centers in Bristol, but even more annoying is that CPW never (to my knowledge) make any attempt to warn customers that upgrading a phone with them will probably invalidate their warrenty. Next time I go up there I'll pretend I want my phone upgraded (because now I know this I'll probably post it off to SE to get it done) and I'll ask them outright if they are an official SE Service Centre and I'll challenge them about the warrenty issue to see what they have to say.

Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to clear up these two issues.
