Just do the P800 PC Suite backup (Phone memory + MSDuo), it should cover pretty much 99% of your data.
I've not heard of any software being Firmware-specific....
What firmware does you dad have - R2D (if so, I'd recommend NOT going to R2F, rather, wait for the next big update).

Just a tip when doing the upgrade.
When I upgraded the P800, I first took a backup to the PC but after the upgrade I had some problems restoring the data. The reason for this was that the internal memory was full. I had taken a backup of a P800 with almost no free memory left. The new firmware occupied more space than the previous version, and because there is no way to make a partial backup/restore, several error messages about "Device full" poped up. The solution was to delete some of the files (using Win Eplorer) on the phone while the restore was in progress.
