@cheese on beans on

My understanding is that the Music Companies managed to obtain a "court order" (or whatever it is called in the USA) to get access to subscriber lists of a peer-to-peer companies (where you pay $xx for annual use of the peer-to-peer s/w) and they used this to locate the 260 people you mentioned.

My understanding is that the way an MP3 file is structured makes it very hard if not impossible to infect it with a virus. Maybe if people go downloading .exe files, but that's their lookout! The worst you can do with a music track is download 3 minutes of static noise or a loop of Madonna asking you what the **** you think you are doing!

Actually, some time ago, there was a fault in the way Windows handled mp3 files while reading ID3 tags which could allow execusion of foreign code. To put it in plain english, had that bug been exploited, your machine could have been infected with a virus contained in the MP3 file. You didn't even have to play the file, all you had to do was move the mouse over it, and the virus would be triggered.

In more technical terms, a buffer-overflow condition existed when the mouse was moved over the file (explorer reads the file when you move the mouse over it, in order to pop up a baloon with IDv3 info), which alloud any arbitrary code to be executed on the machine. All windows XP versions vere affected. This particular bug has been fixed now.

Here is the link to Microsoft's own announcement for those who are interested

The end of free music ?? Hell no, check DirectConnect, eMule, Overnet, Gnutella network, Bittorent, FTP, ........ . For now I recommend bittorent if the file your looking for is recent and very popular and Directconnect.

Cheers

Torrent music are a bit limited and you'll have to download the whole album some people might not have a broadband connection so it's a little hard for them.... but again torrnets are GREAT for apps, games and of course movies !!

I hope torrents will go for ever
