One of the reasons for changing carriers is the people you call mostly are on another network, and cross network calls can be quite expensive. As far as I have been able to find out, if you take your old number to another network, people on the new network will still be paying x-network when they call you, eventhough u;re on the new network. Think of this before goign along this route.

In the USA, from wot i understand, Cellphone companies do not have a dedicated dial code (like 078877 for my Vodafone in the uk), for example, NewJersey is 973, your cellphone will also start with 973 (though ofcourse, you can choose any statecode you want. This has the added advantage that since local calls are free in the US, ppl can call you for free even on a cell phone (though ur incoming minutes do get consumed). .... right.. i know I had a point here... will get back as soon as I figure out wot it was...

I was just reading up on this in Australia again and it seems it takes 4 hour or less to port your number these days!
