To answer the original poster:
Almost certainly it's the case that you need two (deux!) GPRS data accounts, identical apart from their APNs which differ, one being 'wap' and the other being 'internet'...(or something like that). Furthermore, the service provider needs to enable BOTH APNs on the account.
Once set up, Internet uses the 'wap' APN data account, while Opera and POP3 email etc. uses the 'internet' APN data account.
