Well, I would be getting a P800 so that sounds promising.
The combination of the 2 sounds ideal. Would the HTML browser let me check webmail?

I can't see why not - if it's all web based then no problem.
It might be a little cumbersome though... if there's not too much mail, I'd use the integrated client.
Also, the internal browser can't cope with javascript. If you're thinking of something like hotmail, then I'd try the WAP page (if there is one) as the web page contains java.

Thanks for the help, I would be using my Mac.com webmail so it might work, however I think the 1mb gprs bundle might be the way to go.

One word of advice...
When you get your phone, change the APN names and do something like put an "I" at the beginning of the "OrangeGPRSInternet" APN name, and a "W" in front of the "OrangeGPRSWAP" APN name.
If you click the little globe to see what APN you're connected to, it only gets so far, and doesn't read out the vital part (i.e. it would say "OrangeGPR..."). If you do this, then you'll be able to tell which you're connected to easily.
Also make sure you set the browser to use the WAP APN... for the first month I had my P800 I neglected to do this... ouch!

No you can't use gprs wap to view web pages, it uses a different gateway, but you can use dial-up to view both wap & web pages though it is obviously much slower than using a gprs internet connection.
