Nokia Java capability is good, but on the phones like 6100, 7250, etc.. the screen quality is rubbish. It lags and looks absolutely terrible.
I'd go for the T610 for simply the screen quality, but the best one of all is the 3650 for Java.
The operation is awesome, the screen is unbelievable, and the memory is amazing. I have over 180 Java Games on my phone, and I have not even dented my memory card's capacity.
If you dont mind a bit of a larger phone (mind you, it does video recording and a mass of other things) then 3650 rocks.

That's where the lack of socket support spawns from.
You'd definitly want a phone with MIDP 2+

If your friend wants to make some money with his Java apps, then he should definitely do those apps for Nokia phones...And from the Java performance point of view Nokia phones have one of the best Java implementation in their phone at the moment.

I don't think there's MIDP 2.0 phones in sales yet. At least Nokia 6600 have MIDP 2.0. And I don't think there's any phone even announced supporting higher version of MIDP than 2.0.

You don't need MIDP2 to support sockets. They can be implemented through jsrs
