It is quite simple. The answer is NO. The developers of Opera told us it was not possible because anyone who uses the p800 in landscape mode would have to render every bit of text as graphics and this is tooo slow. If the developers of opera couldnt do, then no one can. Possibly with a newer os, but so far, NOT POSSIBLE, NOT EVER NEVER EVER. Case closed.

as previously mentioned, the p800 CAN render text in landscape mode, look at mobi's pocket reader... it is possible, it just has to be programmed that way, but no developers have come out with it. Displaying text in "landscape" is not a problem.

But does that not still leave the problem of text input? I'm no programmer, so I'm not saying it's impossible, but isn't the text input (JotPro or whatever it's called) built into UIQ? And therefore we'd need it to be implemented into the OS before we could use it? Sure, Opera could run in landscape mode, but what use is that when you have to change back to portrait mode every time you want to type in a web address, type your log in name, etc.

Like I say, I'm not a programmer and no Symbian expert, so I'd like it if someone could tell me I'm wrong!

The answer to this question is Yes and No

Yes

The screen is capable of rendering in landscape mode. There are a number of programs for the P800 that work in this mode.

No

You cannot render in landscape mode where text input is required. So for example Opera CANNOT run in landscape mode because of a limitation in the OS.

That limitation being that the Virtaul Keyboard, and JotPro especially require text/field entry to be in portrait mode.

As far as I am aware this limitation has not been addressed in the P900 (but it may well be addressed in later P Series phones, especially as it is one of the most sought after features and obvious limitation of the P Series phones)

The Sony UX50 (one of the latest Clies) is widescreen,
It uses a different OS and all of its software has to re written by the developers to run in landscape mode.
This means that 'if' we see a landscape SE PDA, it will be on a new device not on the current P*00s.

I have heard that the next version of Tracker will allow you to rotate the info (date/time/memory) through 90°, 180° and 270°.

In the mean time, EZoom has recently been released on My-Symbian for the P*s.
This seems to have the ability to zoom and rotate the screen, whilst still allowing the device to be used.
As it zooms it does not allow you view the whole screen but certainly seems to be a step in the right direction.

I have heard about a shop in north London that will chip the phone so that it works only in widescreen, this process is not reverseable though
