It might not even be a new email message at all! It could be that annoying Push inbox symbol. All you have to do to remove that would be to go to messages, WAP push, and clear inbox! if that doesn't work, then thats a first for me!

I tried it all and was surprised when the phoneware update didn't get rid of it. In the end it was the WAP push solution. Thanks diddy0071 and everyone else for taking the time to give me your advice.

Thanks to you man! I had the exact same problem when I first got my T68i. At&t wireless seems to think I give a damn about their wap site updates, by sending me annoying messages that I: (A) don't want, and (B) don't need! They seem to pop-up unwanted, and you can't turn them off! So now you know!
