A higher output emitter would give a higher (infrared) output for the same amount of current. I think its unlikely that SE would use an expensive high output component, even if it did mean conserving power, they would have chosen a middle ground between expense on one hand and power conservation on the other. So its probable that this will work. If they did use a very high output emitter, and supply it with low current, then increasing the output might be a case of bypassing a series resistor somewhere. wont know until i crack this thing open and take a look, but im very confident that its possible. As for the range, not sure but i reckon give me a week and ill have at least tripled the effective range. Its all theory at the moment though....

Eeeh, who uses IR anyway? U guys ever hear about an old Danish king called Harald Gormsson a.k.a. Harald Blåtand (935–985) son of Gorm the old och Tyra Danebot, who united Denmark and Norway and introduced Christianity?

(Blåtand is of course Bluetooth in English )

@andypandy

Why yes I have heard of him, in fact it just so happens that I conducted a detailed research paper into Norse burial rituals and he featured prominently.
There is considerable debate on the subject of whether or not he fully converted to Christianity owing to several anomalous archealogical finds relating to the burial chambers of his parents as well as his own burial chamber; coupled with similar conversions amongst royalty in early Chrisitan societies e.g. the saxons and various other Germanic tribes.
Out of curiosity, what was your point in mentioning him? He is a little known king to anyone but academics with an interest in either the spread of Christianity throughout europe, Vikings or Germano-Norse pagan burial rituals.

Very good, I'm always up for a history fuelled jape and that was absolutely top notch, first class effort all the way. I particuarly liked the little bluetooth pun, I am not quite sure why the king was called 'bluetooth', presumably he had blue teeth, but one wonders how he got them like that ...
Anyway, congratulations on an absolute corker of a prank, just goes to show what an amazingly interesting and funny companion history can be to us.

Got a t8 screwdriver and a high power ir emitter then took my phone apart only to find that the emitter and reciever are part of an enclosed unit which cant really be replaced. bollocks. anyway, there are some resistors around the emitter which probably regulate the power to it so ill try to get some circuit diagrams from SE (will be lucky) and see if i can find a way to boost the current. fingers crossed.
