Krad...
Some of the things you have discussed are common problems across all operators...
Unfortunately, conflicting information and a lack of knowledge seems rife across the board, Orange are not the only ones guilty of this, just look at their respective websites to confirm this for a start !...
Signal strength will of course vary depending on where you are...Vodafone are best here, whilst Orange and O2 are on par, whilst T-Mobile are laughable... when I had the a phone from them (needless to say it went back within the week) one end of town had a medicore signal, the other had nothing at all...
I will agree that the firmware issue is a little annoying, but if something ain't broke, then why try to fix it... my phone is working fine as it is, so I don't know if i would update the firmware anyway... if I had problems, then that would be a different matter... and if you have a dial-up connection, then the online update would surely be tedious... better to pop it into a shop for an hour or so... and they can reportedly solve the Orange software issue too...
As for the Link, they didn't even have the phone when I visited, and that was only a couple of weeks ago, the only place I could find it "locally" (apart from the Orange shop, who refused to budge on their price) was at CPW who were somewhat less than knowledgeable on the tariffs never mind the phone, quite convincing sales people though admittedly (they even sold me one of their flashing santa hats with 20% off!!!!)... The Orange shop
I cannot comment on the billing since I have not had any problems with that... all of my calls come off the inclusive minutes and text messages are deducted as per the promotion... if there were any problems though, I would feel more reassured that you can get in touch with Orange much easier than the rest...
But all in all, I see no problems with Orange as an overall service provider... but each to their own i suppose

just to add my 2p worth if your on orange and just wana upgrade, you can do it through the cpw for the same cost and at tha mo the cpw p900 handsets are unlocked sim free so you can still use it on orange but not have any of their crap and use the online update service!
