Boyi, I'm not trying to sound condescendent over here, but XP failure and data loss are different things. Obviously those may occur simultaneously, but not often. The idea is that you shouldn't have lost any files unless you had a HDD failure or a virus as gelfen pointed out. And with the errors you described during POST, the situation may be more serious than you think. Try to run a system test to check that all components are within operating parameters. Also, avoid using System Restore unless... This message was posted from a T310

if there's one thing i've learned in all my years, it's that windows sucks big time! xp included! my 1st major crash with xp was one where i thought latop's my hard drive failed. i took it to the toshiba service centre expecting to have the hard drive replaced under warranty.

turned out it was massive data corruption by windows xp. fortunately, they were able to make the system bootable just so i could back up my data before doing a complete restoration of the HDD to its original state. needless to say, xp did the same thing again a month ago, but this time i was prepared for it.

my advice to you is:
1. always keep your data on a separate disk partition from the OS in case of crashes and the need to reformat. never trust windows (or any OS i suppose) with leaving your data vulnerable to it's schizophrenic antics

2. backup your data regularly. i have a separate desktop pc with dual hard drives that is not allowed to be used for anything else but data backups. i do backups weekly to both drives, thus i have all my data in triplicate. has windows made me paranoid or what?!?!

if you set up a little home network for your pc's, doing backups, even with huge GB's of data doesn't take too much time at all.

good luck, and never fully trust windows!!!!

Just thought i'd better mention this,the night before this happened i was turning off the computer and a message popped up saying,

'other people are using this computer,are you sure you want to switch off,they will lose any programs or data being used',

something to that effect anyway.
And although it looks like i have notepad,paint etc,when i click on them,nothing happens!

Can i just reinstall winxp to fix this? Anyone?

Also,when i switch off my PC,when i turn it back on some of the settings are reset,pointer speed is one of them although the theme stays the same,man this is depressing,and it would have to happen at xmas

EDIT;
In fact i just noticed that if i save anything,bookmarks,favourites,whatever,after swithing my PC off and on again,THEY ARE NOT THERE ANYMORE! AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGH!!

i did say it depended how much stuff you had. but really, i meant it is a useful as a transfer device to backup somewhere else if you can't get a network connection.

@boyi - many are saying that many programs/softwares are not much compatible to the Windows XP Operating System, very delicate/sensitive at times. So many also are using the old Windows 98 Special Edition Operating System, very reliable when truly needed . . .

Win 2000 is also fairly robust.
