Yes, I see where I have gone wrong, and thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction; it was a problem with the Phone Connection Monitor (PCM) which I had installed.
Basically, the software was only looking for connections via USB (the docking station). As soon as I asked the PCM to look at bluetooth connections, it found the phone and the animated icon, as you said, appeared, once I established a serial connection.
I am very grateful for your help, thanks very much to you both.
One final question: is it possible to establish a serial connection between the two devices without having to click on the "serial connection" button on the PC? I ask this because if I am in another room and wish to use my ADSL to browse, I would like to be able to establish a serial connection without having to come back to my PC!

I cheated and bought a long range BT dongle so that I can connect to my PC most places in my house. I have heard about some auto connect s/w but have not tried it myself. I suggest you use the serach facility here on Esato and f no joy start a new thread.

Right thanks mate. Just to ask, "long range" BT dongles: are they actually long range? I've heard accounts of them being pretty poor at distances over 10m. Which BT dongle was it and how far can it supposedly go?

you will see there are at least two (Belkin and MSI) BT dongles for 100m and 200m
