Lets admit it its a tiresome and thankless job which i could never see myself doing
Day in day out the average joe asking you the same old boring questions who half the time will not buy the phone but is trying to impress his girlfriend by pretending he is going to buy the phone at a future date (yeah right) because he wants to be "IN" with the "IN CROWD" well to all the salesmen/woman who do their best GOOD ON YOU AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK you know who you are

ok ok not ALL staff are muppets
They are some staff who know their stuff about what their selling...I just felt agrieved after visiting the Clydebank store of CPW(Name and Shame).
Didnt mean to insult the hard workers out there.

i'd disagree on that, but as mentioned already, people in the phone stores are their to help the average users, they have a bit of knowledge on most handsets that they sell and basic data knowledge, they're not trained on phones and their functions, they pick that up themselves.

What I find amusing about this is that when advertising vacancies, there companies specifically ask for experience or sometimes say, 'Training given' - hmmm, what training?

They are no better than PC world staff. I spent over an hour in my local PChellworld helping two of their customers getting wireless routers. Not only did they tell BOTH customers that WEP wasn't essential, they also claimed that "wardriving" was a myth and it's ok to leave you SSID as default and broadcasting .. and then proceeded to offer both customers routers that won't work with USB ADSL modems.
I went to the link afterwards to enquire about a sim only tariff .. and promptly left again. These retailers need a smack with a dead trout..

I work in a mobile phone retailer and have done for quite a while now. It hacks me off when people on these kind of forums slate staff in the retailers as idiots who know nothing about anything. As has been mentioned above, they know more than enough to help the average person with their enquiries and sales. For geeks like us though, their product knowledge often falls short of the mark (but you have to allow that they cannot be expected to know every detail about every phone).
There are however people like me, and the other guys who have posted above, out there waiting for someone with an equal amount of product knowledge to us to come through our shop doors and brighten up a dull day of selling joe nokia his new phone.

My experience of CPW. the Link et al is not very good. I would liken the sales staff that I have come into contact with as plebs.
Bear in mind that I spent nigh on ten years in a telecoms/IT enviroment more in pre-sales support so perhaps I've an inkling that I may have a little more knowledge than spotty Joe who's trying to sell me a phone with features that are bloody useless to me. When I mention the fact that perhaps I'm a little more sussed than they are I am greeted with a look of incredulity.
Why can't I buy what I want - because I've researched it, on the tariff I want - again, because I've done my research, when I want, with the minimum hassle???
