this page explains all about how to get bbc news onto a mobile phone (wap) or a pda.
but there currently is no substitute for avantgo.
what you might also want to try is look for a rss news feed viewer for symbian, then check what sites support rss news feeds. not sure if that's offline or not.
never tried mobipocket's news thingie.
