Sorry if my post seemed pedantic but in my experience the correct smtp server causes more problems than anything! Mobile ISPs want you to hook up to their service and use their in and out servers. If you have an internet connection then getting the correct smtp server from your service provider should cure the problem. Don't know if it is any help but Voda's smtp servers in UK are
Email SMTP server: smtp.vizzavi.co.uk
Alt email SMTP server: mail.vizzavi.co.uk
Alt email SMTP server: mail.vodafone.net
Alt email SMTP server: send.vodafone.net
Alt email SMTP server: 212.183.156.229
Alt email SMTP server: 62.213.128.92
DNS Server: 212.183.137.012
This is the info or similar that you need from you provider.

@blackhawkuk, it was not pedantic but it distracted of the question, your second post however was correct.
I visited the Vodafone store around the cornere and the guy there helped me out. He owned a P800 and he found the right settings on his computer, in a special section not accessible to us mortals, it is: mail.bs.vodafone.nl
I want to thank all of you for the help advice and the time. I appreciate forums like this immensely because they offer the knowledge of all of you for newbies like me. Now the only thing I need is a question for which i have an answer
but that may come someday.
