i dont think you get me?

the electronic keys on the P900 keypad work even in flip open mode.

just look at the java games? wouldn't it be better to be able to close the flip while to game is running and use the electronic keys?

There are tons of apps that have flip closed features. It doesn't take anything particularly complicated to do, its fairly well documented and all real native apps could and should make use of it.

This goes for real apps only... personal java apps, midlets, appforge vb apps, mophun and anything else that runs within a restricted multiplatform enviroment will typically not be able to. Where these environments are 3rd party addons that you need to install yourself, its conceivable that support for flip closed and other device specific features may be added eventually, and you could simply install a newer version of the environment. If the apps are simple enough and can fit the flip closed client area they might not even need to be modified.

As for the javavm (both the real pjava virtual machine and the midlet engine) it is in rom, and it would take an official SE firmware update to change it. For real java apps (pjava), even if an api for flip closed features was indeed added, apps would have to be rewritten to make use of it.

Additionally, there is no supported or documented way to disable the flip detection in software. Until someone figures it out (if at all possible) or SE provides you with this option in a new rom update (not likely to ever happen), you'll just have to break the actual switch.

You cant make a java "emulator", that would by definition be a java virtual machine implementation exactly like the one already provided by symbian (in rom). This virtual machine is indeed a native (c/c++) application already, and the fact that it doesn't make use of any pX00 specific features is because it is a very complex (and extensive) piece of software provided by sun and symbian (not SE).

Still, SE could indeed make additional customizations and integrate the pjavavm and the midlet engine better with the pX00 hardware (as the OEM in this case they are expected to provide phone specific implementations of the java apis), but it would require a lot of work and judging from what we've seen so far I doubt they consider it a priority.

While there are open jvm implementations that could conceivable be ported to uiq, I doubt anyone would be willing to invest a years worth of coding just to enable better controls in midlet-based action games.

An FYI.

UIQ by default does not have a flipopen/close mode. This was added by Sony Ericsson to their Px00 phones.

That is why Motorola and BenQ doesn't have such a mode and they follow the UIQ standards exactly.

The flipclose (FC) mode however, snce it's not standard does not have any standard way of behaving. Also, even between the P800 and P900, there are quite a bit of differences in behaviour in FC mode. One has a 208x208 screen in FC mode while the other has a 208x144 screen. Other things like touchscreen mode is switched off in the P900 while it is not on the P800.

In short, FC mode is not a standard, does not have proper API, does not behave consistently beween models, and if you write to SE developers, they'll tell you it's not possible to write in FC mode.

What OggPlay, EChess and SMan has done may work today with the P800 and P900 but does not guarantee it's usability in future versions of SE's P.

Hope this helps explain everything.

would it be possible for a 3rd party developer to write a replacment flip closed mode? i'm not asking if it will happen, just if its possible?

if we could close the flip while still running UIQ - programs could be writen for the P900 in the flip closed resolution and we could use the keys.

@mobman:

Don't recall seeing such documentation in the UIQ SDK.
