Thanks anish for your help,but I just had a search both on my computer and my backup disc and I stil can't find any .ecs file.Any other idea?

What is the name of the file in your back up folder and what is its extension?
What phone does your GF use? Is it a p800 or p900? In that case she may have a copy of all that messages in her sent message folder. If she have it then nick her phone (so that you don't have to tell her that you deleted all her messages) for 5 minutes and make a back up of it. Then transfer the messages to your phone.
(!!! What a strange idea, I don't know where I get all these from, you can definitely see that I am bored at work )

how is it that you are able to extract just the messages?
Is it for sure that there is no application which allows you to read and save sms from your p900 to the pc? I have looked everywhere, i think, and to no avail.
