the one at maplins sticks straight out, their is an official sony one which has one head on one end of a cable, and the converter on the other end of the cable

To all those commenting about using cheap 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptors, there's no need to worry about it shorting anything.
I agree with the fact that it may ground the microphone on any Pxxx device, but in reality how many of us talk on the phone whilst we have headphones plugged in to the handset?
If you're planning to talk on the phone whilst having headphones plugged in then you're going to need the handsfree kit provided from SE. If you don't like the sound quality, or you find the headphones uncomfortable, then i suggest you get someone to change the headphones on the headset to some decent ones which you like.
I'm considering offering this service to esato users soon!
