if
your very own phone gets returned to ya they oughta be able to unblock it at reasonable cost. But if it's really cheaper to buy a new phone, get a new phone instead
Changing IMEI's is a way you do not want to go and you specifically do not want to use your own IMEI number.

Would it be "safe" to change the IMEI to that of an older phone you don't use anymore? In my experience, most people tend to have a spare phone or two lying around doing nothing but gathering dust anyway.

One of my previous phones was a Nokia 8850, with the IMEI of a 5110. Had to watch what I was saying when talking to BTCellnet...
