Using a P900, during the "call" click on the GPRS icon and it will display information about transferred data during that call.

yes but if you want to compare be sure to look how long you've been online, more screens open and longer time online takes more data. My opinions in data use were based on the data used to login

TipicME was always my choice.. (i use it on my PC too) the only problem is that as soon as you set your MSN screen name you can't change it - like my TIPIC logs me in as "Ross' P800", and then when i log back in on my PC my username has been changed. a niggle, really, and nothing serious, but a niggle nonetheless.

Tipicme and agile messenger dont actually connect directly to the IM networks they support, they use other proprietary protocols (although tipic is jabber i believe) and proxy systems. The advantage is that the client can be very simple (doesn't have to support several IM protocols) and typically only needs a single outgoing tcp connection on a commonly open port to work. They may also generate less traffic (but not necessarily).

The disadvantage is that all your traffic will pass openly through a third party server (or network of servers), and will of course depend on these in order to make any connection at all. If they go down or are unreachable from your particular gprs connection it wont work.

If you're concerned about reliability or security (and if you have unrestricted internet access) you should consider using a real client like IM+ or Jmsn.

Anyone know about how much data that transfers if you "idle" on a network such as MSN or IRC (if you dont stay on very large channels, max 30 users)???

I'd say about 50k per hour rough estimate.
