Do many people actually use it as a smartphone? I know a lot of people who have series 60 phones but all they do is call and sms. some have a palm or pocketPC for their PDA needs.

I think the reason why the P8/900 have flip keypad was to enable one-handed usage for phone applications and stylus & touchscreen usage for PDA applications. So I can't really compare it with series 60.

In most cases, I think T610 is a better phone that series 60 smartphones.

The main reason they use symbian is because they need (or move towards) a complete and OPENED OS, so everybody can chip in and add programs...standardisation and globalisation are the main words in world today.

For me it doesn't really matter if the Series 60 UI is used or a self developed one, as long as I'm able to install third party applications (non-Java). Symbian is really becoming a standard in the mobile phones industry, so why is only SE not joining in?

SE is joining in.. in fact SE was among the first to use SymbianOS and EPOC (the forerunner to SymbianOS) which is used in the R380.

SE P800/P900 uses SymbianOS v7 (while most Series60 phones uses SymbianOS v6). So SE is surely using Symbian. But why should they use the Series60 gui. Better stay with UIQ especially with the new UIQ v3 which will allow both stylus-based phones and keypad based phones to run the same software

Yes, it does. And this is not all.The Symbian OS is a soft created by a lot of firms involved in this organisation called Symbian. Some of the players are SE, Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia. These are heavy player. Other than than that and maybe the most important thing is that Symbian OS is an opened source software. This means that everybody can chip in with applications and us, the end users, don't have to pay royalities to use it and producers don't have to pay patents for the software.
If u buy a Microsft based phone, u pay for the brand, for the applications (the ones inside the phone and the future ones) and u can't use a wide variety of programs cuz Microsft doesn't produce it.

I definitely think Nokia is more stubborn than SE. Firstly, they keep treating their colored-screen phones like their old monochromatic-screen phone with the same old UI. Secondly, they insist on using their 128x128 pixel screen when you can hardly see anything on it. Lastly, by keeping on designing freaky casings and keypads while ignoring what matters most - the software (e.g. MMS editor on 7650 can't make slides like the T610 can).
